Where to watch the sunset in Sedona

The red rocks do their best work in the last hour of light. Three spots are worth the drive, and the fourth is the deck.

Sunset over Casa Alta.

Airport Mesa

  • No hike needed
  • Widest view in town
  • Arrive an hour early

The overlook on Airport Road looks out across West Sedona to Coffee Pot Rock and Thunder Mountain, and the whole skyline turns orange at once. It is the easiest big view in town, which is also why it is the busiest.

Parking: The overlook lot charges a small fee and fills well before sunset.

Red Rock Crossing

  • Short, flat walk
  • Cathedral Rock over Oak Creek
  • Day-use fee

At Crescent Moon Picnic Site, a short path leads to the creek and the most photographed view in Sedona: Cathedral Rock glowing above Oak Creek. On a calm evening you get the reflection too.

Parking: The picnic site charges a day-use fee per vehicle, and the gate closes not long after sunset. Check the posted time on your way in.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

  • No hike needed
  • Go inside before it closes

A chapel built straight into the red rock in the 1950s, on the far side of Twin Buttes from Casa Alta. It keeps daytime hours, so come in the late afternoon if you want to go inside, then watch the light change on the rocks from the ramp outside.

The deck at Casa Alta

  • No parking to find
  • Fire table
  • Dinner outside

Some nights the best seat is the one you already have. The covered lounge faces Twin Buttes. Light the fire table, bring dinner outside, and watch the color go from orange to pink to deep blue.

Before you go

  • Timing. Look up the sunset time and arrive 45 to 60 minutes before it. The color on the rocks peaks before the sun is actually down.
  • Bring a layer. The desert cools quickly once the sun is gone.
  • Stay for the stars. Sedona is an International Dark Sky Community. Outdoor lighting is kept low, so the night sky is far brighter than most visitors are used to.
  • Fees and hours change. The Forest Service page for Crescent Moon Picnic Site has the current details.

Pick your dates. We'll light the fire table.
